Traditionally, shoes have been made from leather, wood, or canvas, but are increasingly being made from rubber, plastics, and other petrochemical-derived materials. Globally, the shoe industry is a $200 billion-a-year industry.
A dress shoe (U.S. English) is a shoe to be worn at smart casual or more formal events. A dress shoe is typically contrasted to an athletic shoe. Dress shoes are worn by many as their standard daily shoes and are widely used in dance, for parties, and for special occasions.
Good patent leather, clean and polished. Black or brown for regular occasions, with brown being perceived as a bit more casual, nude or somewhat muted tones are nice for weddings and similar occasions. My most worn formal shoes are black patent leather dress shoes and black pumps with a moderate heel.
